PORCH, local charity stocking our food pantries

The following is a letter from Southern Village’s PORCH Coordinator:

Happy New Year!

As we begin 2011, it’s a good time to consider new aspirations, including a little help for those who are currently stuggling right here in our own community.  Some 2,800 households in Chapel Hill and Carrboro were eligible for food pantry visits every month – a 35% increase from 2009.

An easy way to make a difference is through PORCH.  Once a month, neighbors who’ve signed up to contribute simply put their food donations on their front porch and Susan Duke (Southern Village’s neighborhood coordinator) will pick up your donations to be sorted along with the 70+ other contributing neighborhoods for distribution to the local food pantries served.

The next pickup date for donations is January 23rd.  If you’d like to participate, simply send me, Susan, an email, get your food donations ready, and put them on your front porch on the 23rd!

Here’s a summary of SV’s first donation in December:

A big thanks to the 20+ families who donated in our first official month of Southern Village being part of PORCH!

Because I had some vacation time to use before end of year, I took the day off to participate in the whole PORCH process – from our porches to the local food pantries.  After I dropped my daughter off at Carrboro High, I made the rounds of our neighborhood to pick up everyone’s donations.  Then I headed over to Susan’s house in Lake Hogan Farms to add our food to all the other donations and help with the sort.  This is what I saw…PORCH.
