Southern Village HOA

A new fitness course has been installed along the greenway in Southern Community Park, thanks to a collaboration among the Town of Chapel Hill and Southern Village. Southern Village was instrumental in encompassing contributions from Market Street Association, Southern Village Home Owners Association, Southern Village Apartments and Hyatt Place.

The course includes the following equipment by Barrs Recreation and ExoFit Outdoor Fitness: an Air Walker, Single Skier, Sit Up Bench, Fitness Bike, Row Machine, Leg Press, Chest/Lat Combo, Pushup/Dip Combo, Doubles Pull Up Bars, and Arm/Foot Wheel. The twenty thousand dollar project was funded by the Town of Chapel Hill with half of the funding coming from Southern Village Homeowners Association, Market Street Association, Southern Village Apartments and Hyatt Place.

“This project is a great example of collaboration between the Town of Chapel Hill and Southern Village for helping to bring another valuable amenity to Southern Community Park”, said Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Director Jim Orr. “The Fitness Trail allows an individual to engage in low impact exercises as they walk along the park’s greenway system.  This is another project that promotes our commitment to enhancing community heath.”

Southern Village developer D.R. Bryan says he was pleased at the level of public involvement in the project. “I think whenever we can be a part of increasing physical activity and interaction, we should do so,” he said. “I’m thrilled to see this new fitness course.”

The outdoor fitness course on the Fan Branch Trail is currently open for public use. Each piece of equipment is designed to be unique from the other, and is highlighted by its placement in the natural setting of the greenway. The equipment can be used in a variety of ways by adults and children of all ages. Everyone in the community is encouraged to use the new fitness course.

The Fitness course runs along the southern portion of the Fan Branch Trail and greenway and begins at the trail head at Scrogg’s Elementary School and continues into Southern Community Park and around the multi-use soccer fields.

To access the greenway, two parking lots exist at Southern Community Park, one off Sumac Road and the main entrance to the park, and another off Dogwood Acres Drive. Of course, residents of Southern Village, or visitors staying at the Hyatt Place, have direct access to Fan Branch Trail, via multiple access points along the trail.

The SVHOA Annual General Membership (AGM) meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 @ 7pm at 800 Market Street (aka Christ Church).  The doors will open at 6:30pm.  This meeting will last 1 hour.  As always, this meeting & all meetings of SVHOA are open to the public.

It’s with sadness that I share the news that Arun Kilara, President of the Southern Village HOA, died recently. Arun served the Southern Village community for many years, first on the Architectural Review Board, then on the Board of Directors and for two years as President of the HOA. Arun’s kindness, even temperament and commitment to serving this community will be greatly missed.  We send our condolences to his wife, Karen, and to his family.

Dr. Arun Kilara Obituary (reprinted with permission)

Dr. Arun Kilara, a man of true integrity, passed away on October 14, 2017 at UNC Hospital. Arun was born on July 8, 1949 in Bangalore, India to Dr. Krishnaswamy Kilara Iya and Sharada Naranaiah. He graduated from the Scindia School, and earned his B.Sc. at Punjab University. He continued his education at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada where he received his M.Sc. and the University of Nebraska where he completed a PHD in Dairy Science.

Arun joined the faculty at the Pennsylvania State University in 1978. In addition to teaching graduate and undergraduate courses he conducted research in the areas of food proteins, enzymes and dairy foods and conducted outreach/extension programs in continuing education. He also directed the internationally famous Ice Cream Short Course and the Pasteurizer Operators Workshop. He participated in teaching in the Sanitation Workshop, Better Process Control School and Pennsylvania Approved Dairy Laboratory Directors Course. He organized seminars and reengineered production schedules for the University Creamery and chaired a Strategic Planning Committee for the Department of Food Science. He trained 13 PHD students and 35 M.Sc. students. Arun published 120 research papers and contributed to conference proceedings and technical text books.

After leaving Penn State Arun worked for two years as Co-Leader for Director of Protein Applications for Monsanto Company. He spearheaded a new research effort to understand how proteins function in foods.

Arun is survived by his wife, Karen, his three stepchildren: David Sky, Tessie Sabbag and Maggie Sky and seven grandchildren. Surviving also are his brother, Dr. Guru Kilara, and sister, Sandhya Iya, two nieces, a nephew and numerous cousins in India and the United States.

The family is grateful for the love and support of dear friends, Dr. Raghu Ballal and Latha Ballal.
