Town of Chapel Hill Considering More Stop Signs in Southern Village

The Town of Chapel Hill has agreed to consider installing additional stop signs at two Southern Village intersections. These intersections are Highgrove & Brookgreen and Highgrove & Hillspring. Both intersections would be converted to 3-way stops. Additionally, painted crosswalks would be added to ensure that pedestrians could safely cross the aforementioned streets. If you have any questions or comments about these proposed changes please send an e-mail to traffic@southernvillage.org.

Orange County CERT is looking for more participants!

The Orange County Health Department and Orange County Emergency Management invite community members to join the Community Emergency Response Team Program (CERT) . Orange County CERT teaches participants how to provide basic emergency response services in their neighborhood after a disaster. After a major disaster, first responders may not be able to meet service demands in every community. Factors like the number of victims, communication failures, and blocked roads may delay health and safety responders. In a situation like this, community members would have to rely on each other for immediate needs until professional responders arrive.

Participants receive hands-on training in emergency preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, disaster psychology, personal safety, and animal protection. Training ends with a drill where teams practice newly learned skills. Participants also receive educational material and response gear (hard hat, reflective vest, safety whistle, identification badge, and more). After training, teams function as self-sustaining units.

We want multiple Orange County neighborhoods to have a CERT. Please promote this program to members of your community and organization. Summer classes will be held in the Chapel Hill / Carrboro area. Our flyer, training calendar, and registration form are attached. A group of 5 or more people can start a team. Individuals are also welcome to register. There is no registration fee and training materials are provided at no cost.

Be Ready When Disaster Strikes! Join CERT. Click here for more information.

Community Watch Update

Southern Village now has an established Community Watch program. As of today, each street has been assigned a street captain. It is our hope that you have already been contacted by your street captain. If not, please send an e-mail to communitywatch@southernvillage.org and we will help you get signed up. Communication is the foundation of a successful Community Watch program, thus it is very important that everyone consider signing up in the weeks ahead. Please do your part to ask your neighbors to join up as well.

Additionally, the Community Watch program has a subcommittee focused exclusively on traffic issues, specifically those issues that directly relate to child safety. This subcommittee has already met formally with several Town of Chapel Hill employees, including the police department and several traffic engineers. As a result of these meetings, some new stop signs will be added to selected streets next month. Also, some of the existing stop signs will be better marked with permanent orange flags. Finally, next month several crosswalks will enhanced by adding more signage and in some cases more paint on the road. If you any interest in joining this important committee, please send an e-mail to traffic@southernvillage.org and we will help you get signed up.
